Read across the fairway row: a scratch golfer hits 4% more fairways than a 25 handicap. Read across the greens row: 61% against 10%. Fairways barely separate the two, while greens hit, up and down rate and penalty shots all move hard, which is where a 28-stroke scoring gap comes from.
Why the traditional stats hide the leak
Fairways, greens and putts per round all collapse very different outcomes into one number. Missing a fairway by a yard and hitting it out of bounds both count as one missed fairway. Being 60 feet from the pin on the green counts as a hit; being 15 feet away on the fringe counts as a miss.
Putts per round is the worst offender, because it punishes good approach play. Hit more greens and you take more putts, since the alternative was chipping on and holing one. Shot Scope makes the point directly in its own ebook: two-putting from 60 feet is a better result than one-putting from the fringe, and the putts-per-round column scores it lower.
Strokes gained fixes this by refusing to judge a shot without knowing where it started. Every shot gets scored against the position it began from.
The math, plainly
Mark Broadie, a Columbia University professor, built the framework on large shot-location databases. For any position on the course, the database says how many strokes an average reference player takes to finish from there. That number is the expected strokes.
The formula for one shot:
expected strokes before, minus expected strokes after, minus 1
A drive from a tee worth 4.10 expected strokes that finishes in the fairway at 2.90 expected strokes gains 0.20. Miss into the trees at 3.40 and you lose 0.30. A 20-foot putt carries an expected value near 1.85, so holing it gains 0.85 and three-putting loses 1.15.
The PGA Tour publishes six versions built on ShotLink data: off the tee, approach the green, around the green, putting, tee to green, and total. As of the 2026 season Scottie Scheffler leads SG: Total at 2.263 strokes per round, which is the entire spread between the best player in the world and a Tour average.
What the amateur data actually says
Approach play separates handicaps more than anything else. Arccos shot-tracking data puts greens in regulation at 51% for scratch players, 43% at a 5 handicap, 34% at a 10, and 28% at a 15. Approach proximity moves with it: 41.7 feet for scratch, 68 feet for a 15 handicap.
Arccos also tracked golfers who made the climb. Its race to scratch study followed 14 golfers who started at an average 6.1 handicap and reached scratch over an average of 26 months and 143 logged rounds. They improved about 2.5 strokes a year, split this way:
- Approach: 1.02 strokes (40.8% of the total gain)
- Driving: 0.81 strokes (32.4%)
- Short game: 0.42 strokes (16.8%)
- Putting: 0.25 strokes (10%)
Fourteen golfers is a small sample and Arccos says so, but the ranking matches the Shot Scope benchmark table above. Putting comes last in both.
Putting keeps coming last for a reason. A 2025 empirical Bayes study of PGA Tour performance by Ryan Brill and Abraham Wyner found putting skill “nearly indistinguishable from noise” even across hundreds of thousands of putts, while driving and approach play showed real, persistent variation between players. If Tour-sized data struggles to separate putting skill from luck, your 12 rounds will not manage it.
The penalty row in the table above is the other honest finding. A 25 handicap takes 4.67 penalty shots per round against 0.56 for scratch. That is a 4-shot gap that comes from decisions off the tee rather than from swing quality, which makes it the cheapest place a high handicap can look first.

How to read your own numbers
- Pick the baseline that matches the decision. Tour for scale, scratch for single digits, a target handicap for everyone else.
- Log at least 20 rounds before you trust a category. That is roughly 250 to 300 full swings. Putting needs more.
- Audit the data before you act on it. Trackers miss tap-ins, invent shots from practice swings, and misplace pins. Those errors bias a category in one direction, so extra rounds will not average them away.
- Fix the biggest negative, not the most annoying one. Three-putts sting, but the approach shot that left a 50-foot putt usually gave away more.
The mistakes that make strokes gained lie
- Reading one round. A single round is 60 to 100 shots spread across four categories. Any of them can be off by a stroke for reasons that have nothing to do with your game.
- Switching baselines mid-season. Your approach number against Tour and your approach number against a 15 handicap are different measurements. Compare like with like or the trend is meaningless.
- Ignoring how penalties get assigned. Providers allocate a water ball differently: some charge driving, some charge approach, some create a separate penalty bucket. Check where yours lands before you conclude your irons are broken.
- Trusting putting over short samples. See above. Read it over a season.
- Collecting data and never changing practice. The metric earns its keep only when it redirects range time.
